Seaweed Foraging at Shell Beach, Sonoma April 24 & April 28

Join Ethnobotanist Autumn Summers and Gathering Thyme as we explore our diverse Northern California seaweeds. This is a two-part series.

April 24th 6-8pm (Online Teaching)  What are seaweeds? How are they classified? Autumn will discuss seaweed morphology and habitat, sustainable harvesting & drying techniques ... and more.

April 28th 8-11am (Seaweed Foraging)  We will meet at Shell Beach in Sonoma County. What to bring?

  • A grateful attitude
  • A sheathed or closeable knife or scissors for harvesting
  • Bring bags to put your harvested seaweed in. Mesh laundry bags work great as they drain the water. Different sized plastic bags are useful as well.
  • Be sure to wear clothes that can get wet and bring a change of clothes
  • Wear non-slip shoes that can get wet
  • Warm layers
  • Bring an ice chest to keep your seaweeds cool in the car on your drive home.
  • Snacks and water for the morning
